JOHANNESBURG -- South Africa's ruling African National Congress (ANC) has secured 159 out of 400 seats in the National Assembly in the country's 2024 general elections, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) officially announced on Sunday evening.

The main opposition party, the Democratic Alliance (DA), came second with 87 seats in the National Assembly, followed by the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party with 58 seats and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) with 39 seats, according to the official election results released by the IEC at the Results Operation Center (ROC) in Midrand, Johannesburg. VIENNA -- The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and its allies, a group known as OPEC+, decided to extend its current output cuts at least into the third quarter of this year to shore up oil prices.

Following a virtual meeting of OPEC+ oil and energy ministers, OPEC said in a statement that OPEC+ will extend this year's production quotas for its members to the whole year of 2025. The quotas include a 2 million barrels per day (bpd) cut to the official output targets originally agreed in late 2022. (OPEC-Crude-Oil market)

COLOMBO -- Ten people were killed and five others missing during the past 24 hours as heavy rains and strong winds lashed out across Sri Lanka, the Disaster Management Center (DMC) said on Sunday.

Most of the deaths were reported from the capital Colombo as over 150 mm of rains was experienced since the early hours of Sunday. (Sri Lanka-Rains)

YAOUNDE -- A Cameroonian official was killed in an ambush by suspected separatist fighters in Cameroon's restive Anglophone region of Northwest, local and military sources said on Sunday.

Derick Fonye, chief of sports and physical education in Donga Mantung division of the region, was killed Saturday night, said an army official in the region who opted for anonymity. (Cameroon-Anglophone region-Separatist) Enditem
