VIENTIANE -- Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong led a delegation to Laos to attend senior officials' meetings of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)-China, Japan, the Republic of Korea (ROK), as well as the East Asia Summit and the ASEAN Regional Forum from June 7 to June 8.

Sun told media after the meetings that the participants exchanged views on such issues as the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, the Ukraine crisis, the Korean Peninsula, Myanmar, climate change, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence. (Laos-China-Stance)

KATHMANDU -- Nepal's inflation moderated to a 31-month low at 4.4 percent in mid-May as the South Asian country has suffered from an economic slowdown, Nepal's central bank said on Monday.

The year-on-year consumer price inflation went down from 7.41 percent a year ago, the Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) said in its monthly report on macroeconomic and financial situations. (Nepal-Inflation)

BANGKOK -- Thailand's rice exports jumped 32.18 percent in the first five months of 2024 compared to a year earlier due to higher demand for the grain amid concerns over food security and volatile weather conditions, official data showed on Monday.

The Southeast Asian country shipped out 4.6 million tons of rice during the January-May period, worth 106.28 billion baht (about 2.9 billion U.S. dollars), an increase in shipment value of 64.59 percent year on year, according to the Ministry of Commerce. (Thailand-Rice Exports)

TOKYO -- Japan's economy shrank an annualized real 1.8 percent in the January-March quarter, revised up from the preliminary reading of a 2.0 percent decline, government data showed on Monday.

The Cabinet Office said gross domestic product (GDP), the total value of goods and services produced in a country, contracted less in the first three months of this year than initially reported, as corporate capital spending fell less than initially reported. (Japan-GDP)

SINGAPORE -- A total of 1.28 million visitor arrivals were recorded in Singapore in May, up 15.3 percent year-on-year, according to the latest statistics released by the Singapore Tourism Board (STB).
