WINDHOEK, June 10 (Xinhua) -- Namibia is taking major steps toward bridging the digital divide in remote regions with the groundbreaking of the Ikumwe Tower on Monday in the Zambezi Region.

The initiative aims to enhance internet connectivity in remote areas, fostering economic growth and improving access to education and healthcare services, said Minister of Information and Communication Technology Emma Theofelus Monday in a statement.

The Ikumwe Tower is one of 15 new towers to be built in the country, with an investment of 35 million Namibian dollars (about 1.8 million U.S. dollars).

According to Theofelus, the improved connectivity would provide students in underserved areas with access to vital educational resources, support telemedicine in rural healthcare, and enable local businesses to compete in the digital marketplace.

The Ikumwe Tower is part of a broader effort that includes additional towers in Nakabolelwa and Mutikila in the same region, she said.

These towers are expected to stimulate economic growth, promote regional integration, and empower the youth by providing reliable internet access, Theofelus said, emphasizing the government's long-term commitment to digital transformation.

She called on citizens, businesses and institutions to embrace the digital revolution for the benefit of all Namibians. Enditem
