TUNIS, June 11 (Xinhua) -- UN Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix on Monday praised Tunisia's contribution to the different UN missions it participates in, said a statement released by Tunisian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Lacroix made the remarks during his meeting with Tunisian Minister of Foreign Affairs Nabil Ammar in the capital Tunis.

On the occasion, the UN official extended his department's appreciation for the proactivity and flexibility of the Tunisian authorities in peacekeeping.

Lacroix also praised the discipline, professionalism and initiative that Tunisian forces displayed in the five UN peace missions in Africa, while requesting a greater and more diverse presence of Tunisian staff in leadership positions.

For his part, the Tunisian foreign minister stressed the importance that Tunisia attaches to its participation in peacekeeping operations as part of its commitment to the objectives and principles of the UN for maintaining international peace and security.

Ammar also underlined the need for the international community to assume its responsibility in putting an immediate end to the occupying entity's brutal aggression against innocent civilians in Gaza in violation of all international instruments, mainly the Charter of the UN and its principles and objectives.
