MANILA, June 12 (Xinhua) -- The Asian Development Bank (ADB) on Wednesday approved 111 million U.S. dollars for the construction of a multipurpose dam in Samoa.

The Alaoa Multipurpose Dam Project will reduce flood risks in Samoa's capital, Apia, the ADB said in a news release, adding that a small run-of-river hydropower plant will also help reduce Samoa's dependency on imported fossil fuels for power generation.

"Extensive assessments and technical analyses were undertaken to ensure that the infrastructure design will incorporate robust climate and disaster-resilient features," said ADB Director General for the Pacific Leah Gutierrez.

The ADB said the dam project will address Samoa's "cross-cutting climate adaptation challenges" of flood risk management, sustainable and reliable water supply, and renewable energy security. Enditem
