PHNOM PENH, June 13 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia has seen a drop of about 30 percent in the number of new HIV infections over the last decade, said the National AIDS Authority's latest report on Thursday.
HIV is the virus that causes AIDS.
The Southeast Asian country recorded roughly 1,400 new HIV infections in 2022, a decrease of approximately 30 percent from 2,000 in 2010, the report said, adding that the disease killed 1,100 people in 2022.
The prevalence rate of HIV/AIDS infections among adults aged between 15 and 49 years old was 0.5 percent, the report said, adding that the kingdom has an estimated 76,000 people living with HIV/AIDS.
"About 64,932 of the people living with HIV/AIDS have received antiretroviral drugs," the report said.
Ieng Mouly, a senior minister and chairman of the National AIDS Authority, said recently that Cambodia was committed to ending AIDS as a public health threat and to meeting the 95-95-95 targets by 2025.
The targets mean 95 percent of the people who are living with HIV knowing their HIV status, 95 percent of the people who know that they are living with HIV being on lifesaving antiretroviral treatment, and 95 percent of people who are on treatment being virally suppressed.
"Cambodia had already achieved a response rate of 86-99-98 by the end of 2022," he said. Enditem
