Int'l half marathon kicks off in Cambodian capital to celebrate Queen-Mother's 88th birthday

PHNOM PENH, June 16 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia on Sunday hosted a Phnom Penh International Half Marathon here to celebrate the 88th birthday of the kingdom's Queen-Mother Norodom Monineath Sihanouk.

Thong Khon, president of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia (NOCC), said a total of 4,110 professional and amateur athletes took part in this year's event, which was held in front of the Royal Palace.

"Among the runners, some 688 are foreigners and 3,422 are locals," he said in a speech before the start of the race.

Besides the half marathon, there were also a 10-km contest, a 5km race and a 2-m fun run, he added.

According to the results released by the NOCC, the women's half marathon was won by Cambodia's Eng Muyngim, who finished in one hour, 32 minutes and 46 seconds, while the men's race was won by Japan's Saeki Makino, who crossed the finish line in 1:09:33. Enditem
