FAIZABAD, Afghanistan, June 25 (Xinhua) -- Counter-narcotics police have destroyed a total of 517 acres of poppy farms in north Afghanistan's Badakhshan province, said a statement of provincial police on Tuesday.

The illegal crop has been destroyed in Argo and Khash districts over the past two days, the statement asserted.

Without providing more details, the statement noted that police will not allow anyone to cultivate poppy or any other illegal crops in the province.

Thousands of acres of poppy fields have been destroyed in Afghanistan since early this year, according to the officials.

The Afghan caretaker government banned poppy cultivation and its processing to drug and drug trafficking in April 2022, and since then, the administration has been fighting to eliminate the drug menace in the once poppy-growing country. Enditem
