BEIJING, July 12 (Xinhua) -- The just-concluded NATO summit in Washington was crowded with allegations against China regarding the Ukraine crisis, highlighting just how the military alliance relies on fear-mongering and scapegoating to justify its continued existence.

NATO's claim that China is a "decisive enabler" of the protracted conflict is not only a blatant disregard of facts, but also a clumsy attempt to distract global attention from NATO's major responsibility for the crisis, as well as its destabilizing role in the world.

Such a smear campaign against China reveals NATO's hypocrisy, especially given the military alliance's own record of unprovoked military interventions and violations of international law.

As an anachronistic relic of the Cold War, NATO's expansionist policies and interventionist actions have often exacerbated global tensions rather than alleviated them as it has always claimed.

Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the hegemonic bloc has expanded eastward five times, eating away at the security space of those outside the bloc in pursuit of its own absolute security. Such self-willed moves over the decades have ignored the legitimate concerns of others, particularly Russia, setting the stage for today's bloody conflict.

China is neither the creator of nor a participant in the Ukraine crisis. On the contrary, it has consistently worked on mediation and promoted peace talks. Despite NATO's blame-shifting, China's impartial position and constructive role have been widely recognized by the international community.

In contrast, NATO members under the U.S. leadership have increased their armaments and conducted military exercises on an increasingly larger scale, severely impacting regional peace and stability. Their escalating military support for Ukraine has also fueled the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

During the just-concluded summit, Washington intensified its efforts to cultivate a climate of "Russophobia," pressuring its allies to commit more weapons and financial aid to Ukraine, at the risk of pushing the region to the brink of limbo.

The international community is not fooled; it is becoming increasingly evident that Washington and NATO are truly fanning the flames and serving as the "decisive enabler" of the conflict.

After the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, John Mearsheimer, a political science professor at the University of Chicago, pointed out that "the United States is principally responsible for causing the Ukraine crisis."

"My key point, however, is that the United States has pushed forward policies toward Ukraine that (Russian President Vladimir) Putin and his colleagues see as an existential threat to their country -- a point they have made repeatedly for many years," wrote Mearsheimer in an article entitled "The Causes and Consequences of the Ukraine War."

Under U.S. command, NATO is also seeking to expand its scope far beyond the North Atlantic region, venturing into areas like the Asia-Pacific, which has nothing to do with its operational mandate.

This attempted expansion into Asia reflects NATO's enduring Cold War mentality and raises serious concerns about the alliance's role in undermining regional peace given its long track record of peacebreaking.

The Asia-Pacific region neither welcomes nor needs any role of NATO in its regional affairs. NATO's expansion into the Asia-Pacific will only heighten geopolitical risks and undermine the region's decades-long prosperity and stability.

NATO has outlived its usefulness and has become nothing more than a tool of Washington for pure geopolitical purposes. Peace-loving people of the whole world should stay highly vigilant. Enditem
