BEIRUT, July 16 (Xinhua) -- Two people of Syrian nationality were killed, and a Lebanese civilian was wounded on Tuesday in an Israeli airstrike on southern Lebanon, according to Lebanese military sources.
The military sources, who spoke anonymously, said that an Israeli drone fired two air-to-surface missiles at a motorcycle at al-Khardali point on the international road linking the town of Marjayoun and the city of Nabatieh in southern Lebanon's border area, killing two Syrians.
A Lebanese, who was riding his motorcycle close to the site of the Israeli raid, was also injured, the sources said, adding that an ambulance belonging to the Islamic Health Authority transported the casualties to a hospital in Nabatieh.
Meanwhile, Hezbollah announced in a statement that it attacked the Israeli Kiryat Shmona settlement with missiles in response to Israel's attack on the town of Bint Jbeil a day earlier, during which three Lebanese civilians were killed by Israeli fighter jets.
According to the sources, Israeli aircraft and warplanes launched on Tuesday five airstrikes on four towns and villages in the eastern and central sectors of southern Lebanon, while artillery bombed seven border towns and villages with about 35 shells.
Tensions along the Lebanon-Israel border escalated on Oct. 8, 2023, following a barrage of rockets launched by Hezbollah toward Israel in solidarity with Hamas's attack on Israel the day before. Israel then retaliated by firing heavy artillery toward southeastern Lebanon.
The level of tension between Hezbollah and the Israeli army has escalated recently, as the Israeli military announced "its approval of operational plans for an attack on Lebanon."
Meanwhile, Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah warned that no place in Israel "will be safe" from his party's missiles in the event of an outbreak of war. Enditem
