PARIS, July 31 (Xinhua) -- Australian cyclist Luke Plapp was released from hospital on Wednesday after undergoing abdominal surgery, the Australian Olympic Committee confirmed.

The 23-year-old Plapp was taken to hospital on Saturday after falling on the treacherous road surface in the men's time trial. The accident was said to be caused by heavy rain.

He slid under a barrier and photos showed him bloodied and with the shirt almost ripped off his back.

The cyclist is now back in the Olympic Village and will be monitored by the Australian medical staff in the coming days.

He won't participate this Saturday's road race, with Ben O'Conner called in to support Michael Matthews and Simon Clarke. Enditem
