PARIS, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- The men's sprint in the track cycling at the velodrome in Saint-Quentin-en Yvelines promises to see records tumble if the qualifying on Wednesday lunchtime is anything to go by.

The first session of Wednesday morning began with the world record for covering 200 meters of the banked track at the velodrome set at 9.100 seconds by Paul Nicholas of Trinidad and Tobago and by the time the 30 riders have made their run, it had been broken now.

Matthew Richardson of Australia was the first to set a new best of 9.091, before the last rider Harrie Lavreysen of the Netherlands went even faster with a time of 9.088, at an average speed of 79.225 kilometers an hour.

Lavreysen won gold as part of the Dutch team sprint trio on Tuesday, with his companion Jeffrey Hoogland qualifying in sixth with a time of 9.293 seconds. Enditem
