SEOUL, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's electricity demand hit a record high Monday amid the continued heatwave across the country, Yonhap news agency said Tuesday citing data from the Korea Power Exchange.

The country's aggregate power demand reached a fresh high of 102.327 gigawatts (GW) for an hour until 3:00 p.m. local time Monday (0600 GMT Monday), topping the previous high of 100.571 GW tallied on Aug. 7 last year.

Solar power output amounted to 17.924 GW during the peak hour, accounting for 17.5 percent of the total electricity supply.

The record power demand came as the sweltering heat plagued the country for the past weeks.

Monday's daytime high soared to 34.1 degrees Celsius in the capital Seoul, which had been struck by tropical nights for 23 consecutive days.

The maximum power demand has been on the increase from 10 GW in 1987 to 58 GW in 2007, surpassing 100 GW for the first time in 2023. Enditem
