MOGADISHU, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- Seven people including police officers were killed Thursday after a suicide bomber blew himself up at a busy intersection in Mogadishu, the Somali capital, according to police.

"We confirm that seven people, both civilians and police, were killed and six others injured in the suicide bomb attack that happened in front of a police academy," the police said in a report.

The al-Shabaab militants claimed responsibility for the attack, saying that the suicide bomber targeted the police academy in the Hamar Jajab district of Mogadishu.

The latest attack coincided with the appointment of a new police chief and preparations by the Somali government to take security responsibility from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) in December. Enditem
