PORT-LOUIS, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- Dharam Gokhool was unanimously elected as the new president of the Republic of Mauritius at a session of the National Assembly Friday.

He succeeds Prithvirajsing Roopun, whose term of office ended on Dec. 2.

A former minister of education and a respected figure on the Mauritian political scene, Gokhool expressed his gratitude and sense of responsibility following his election.

"It is a great responsibility on my frail shoulders, but I will rise to the occasion to bring honor to the Republic of Mauritius," he told local media.

A former professor at the University of Mauritius, the new president began his political career in 1976. He also served as minister of industry.

The electoral process for the Mauritian presidency is indirect. The President is elected by the members of the National Assembly. The President has rather honorary functions and no executive powers.

During the same session, Robert Hungley was elected Mauritian vice president by the members of parliament. Enditem
