NEW DELHI, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- A policeman gunned down his colleague using his service rifle AK-47 and later used the same weapon to kill himself Sunday morning in Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

The incident took place inside a police vehicle they were travelling in near the Kali Mata temple in Rehembal area of Udhampur district, about 198 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"Two police personnel have died and the third police personnel is safe. The bodies have been taken to Government Medical College Udhampur for postmortem and other procedures," senior police official Amod said, citing the result of an initial investigation.

Police have registered a case and ordered an investigation into the incident.

Meanwhile, the policeman who escaped unhurt in the incident is being questioned.

During over three decades of insurgency in the region, several incidents of suicide and fratricide among the stationed troops and policemen were reported.

Health experts say continued separation from family, long duty hours, lack of recreational facilities, poor command and control structure were usually found to be behind such incidents. Enditem
