SARAJEVO, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- The European Commission has officially recognized Bosnia and Herzegovina's "Livno Cheese" (Livanjski sir) as a product of exceptional agricultural heritage, adding it to the prestigious register of Protected Geographical Indications (PGI).

A news release from the European Union on Thursday said that Livno cheese, a hard, full-fat cheese made from cow's milk, sheep's milk, or a blend of both, is celebrated for its slightly sweet, nutty flavor and distinctive piquant aroma. This unique character originates from livestock grazing on the aromatic pastures of the Livno region in western Bosnia, nourished by the blend of Mediterranean and continental climate.

With over a century of tradition, the cheese-making technique has been passed down through generations, ensuring the exceptional quality of Livno cheese. The PGI designation protects not only its unique flavor but also its connection to the region's climate, pastures, and traditional methods.

EU Special Representative in BiH Luigi Soreca noted in a video message that "As of today, Livanjski sir joins products such as Champagne, Parmigiano Reggiano and Jamon iberico in receiving trademark protection from the EU."

Highlighting Livno cheese as the first Western Balkan food to achieve EU protection, Soreca encouraged local producers to apply for EU geographical indications to gain recognition and benefits.

The new denomination will be added to the list of 3,639 agricultural products already in the EU register for agricultural geographical indications, said the news release. Enditem
