LA PAZ, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) -- The Bolivian department of La Paz has declared a state of emergency amid heavy rains and resulting floods that have hit several municipalities since November 2024, said an official on Wednesday.

"To date, eight of the nine departments have been affected, with one department, La Paz, already declared an emergency," Juan Carlos Calvimontes, the country's deputy civil defense minister, told a press conference.

The rains have impacted 65 municipalities and 978 communities, with 84,029 families affected so far and 19 deaths, he said.

He warned that intense rainfall will continue across the country, as Bolivia is entering "a very complex period," according to the National Service of Meteorology and Hydrology (Senamhi). Enditem
