KUALA LUMPUR, Feb. 13 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia's total population in the fourth quarter last year was estimated at 34.2 million, with a slower growth of 1.3 percent, official data showed Thursday.
The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) said in a statement that the population growth rate declined in tandem with the decrease in the number of live births.
The total population comprised 30.8 million (90.1 percent) citizens and 3.4 million (9.9 percent) non-citizens.
The male population increased to 18 million from 17.7 million in the fourth quarter of 2023, while females rose to 16.2 million from 16 million.
Ethnic Malays accounted for 58.1 percent of the population in the fourth quarter, up slightly from 58 percent a year ago.
Indians decreased to 6.5 percent from 6.6 percent, while Chinese remained unchanged at 22.4 percent in the same period. Enditem
