BUCHAREST, Feb. 17 (Xinhua) -- Romania is experiencing its coldest week of the winter, with heavy snowfall and temperatures dropping as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius, according to meteorologists.

The extreme cold is expected to persist until Feb. 24 and 25. In the south and southeast, including the capital Bucharest, snow accumulation could reach up to 20 cm, while strong winds will make travel difficult. Authorities have issued a yellow weather warning for Calarasi, Constanta, Giurgiu, Ialomita, Ilfov (including Bucharest), and Teleorman.

Elena Mateescu, director general of Romania's National Meteorological Administration, said Monday that snow will continue in these areas through Tuesday morning. Winds of up to 45 km/h will cause drifting snow, further complicating conditions.

In the north, temperatures will range from minus 16 to minus 10 degrees Celsius, while in the south, they could drop below minus 10 degrees Celsius by midweek. Mountainous and intramontane regions may see lows near minus 20 degrees Celsius.

Meteorologists warn that this prolonged cold spell could make February 2025 one of the coldest on record, in stark contrast to February 2024, which was the warmest in history. Enditem
