OTTAWA, March 20 (Xinhua) -- Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will ask Governor General Mary Simon to dissolve parliament and call an early election on Sunday, local media reported Thursday.

According to The Globe and Mail, the new prime minister will call a snap federal election for an expected vote on April 28.

The Liberals, Conservatives and New Democratic Party of Canada (NDP) have already booked campaign planes and buses, and their war rooms are set up in the expectation of the Sunday election call, said the report.

According to Radio-Canada, an election campaign is expected to last between 36 and 50 days. Election day remains to be confirmed, but voters are expected to cast their ballots on either April 28 or May 5.

Canadian television network CTV News reported that a final decision on whether election day will be April 28 or May 5 is to be made shortly.

The election is set to be dominated by relations with the United States as U.S. President Donald Trump has been imposing tariffs on a range of goods from its northern neighbor, besides repeatedly challenging Canada's sovereignty by asking it to become the "51st state" of America.

Carney was sworn in as prime minister on March 14 after winning the Liberal leadership race, as the Conservatives had been gaining strength in polls over the past year. Enditem
