MADRID, April 1 (Xinhua) -- Las Palmas goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen is recovering in hospital after an operation on a perforated small intestine.

Cillessen suffered the injury in his side's 1-1 draw away to Celta Vigo on Monday night after a collision with Celta striker Borja Iglesias and had to be carried off the pitch and taken to hospital and underwent the operation at around 1 a.m. local time on Tuesday morning.

"Our goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen has had a successful operation on the perforation of his small intestine. The operation was via laparoscope. The injury happened as a consequence of a collision with the Celta player Borja Iglesias," explains the Las Palmas website, although it fails to give a possible recovery time.

The draw leaves Las Palmas second from bottom from La Liga with 26 points from 29 matches, but only two points from safety.

An improved performance in Vigo should give under-pressure coach Diego Martinez a chance to continue his job when Las Palmas entertains Real Sociedad next Sunday, but a defeat in that game could see the former Granada and Espanyol coach face the sack. Enditem
