Japan's benchmark Nikkei index plunges over 3 pct

TOKYO, April 9 (Xinhua) -- Japan's benchmark Nikkei stock index plunged over 3 percent early Wednesday, tracking overnight declines on Wall Street amid fears of a trade war triggered by U.S. tariffs.

Shortly after 9:30 a.m. local time, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 1,100.01 points, or 3.33 percent, from Tuesday to 31,912.57, while the broader Topix index was down 82.03 points, or 3.37 percent, at 2,349.99.

At 9 a.m. local time, the U.S. dollar fetched 145.85-86 yen compared with 146.21-31 yen in New York and 147.39-40 yen in Tokyo at 5 p.m. local time Tuesday. Enditem
