ISLAMABAD, April 14 (Xinhua) -- The Pakistani government has announced that it is taking measures to promote blue carbon ecosystems to build the maritime sector of the South Asian country and strengthen climate resilience.

"Blue carbon ecosystems are nature's frontline climate defenders. They capture carbon, protect coastlines, sustain marine biodiversity, and support the livelihoods of coastal communities," Pakistan's Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry said while addressing an event on Sunday.

Highlighting the need for ecological preservation, Chaudhry said that the conservation and restoration of essential marine habitats, such as mangroves, sea grasses and salt marshes, is crucial, adding that ecological conservation is part of Pakistan's climate strategy and vision for maritime sustainability.

Talking about the challenges, he said that unregulated coastal development, pollution, overfishing, climate change, and unsustainable land use practices are among the major threats to maritime sustainability.

"Such pressures degrade vital habitats, reduce their capacity to store carbon, and endanger marine life," he warned, stressing the need for integrated and immediate actions and policies to reverse such trends and restore ecological balance.

Chaudhry also underlined the importance of community involvement in promoting the ecological and economic value of Pakistan's marine resources, saying the government institutions are working with coastal residents and local fishermen to ensure that conservation and economic development go together.

"This model not only empowers local communities but ensures long-term sustainability," he added. Enditem
