BUENOS AIRES, April 19 (Xinhua) -- Miguel Merentiel scored one goal and set up another as Boca Juniors extended its lead at the top of Argentina's Primera Division Group A standings on Saturday with a 2-0 home win over Estudiantes.
Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani squandered the chance to put his side ahead just before halftime when his tame attempt from the penalty spot was comfortably saved by Matias Mansilla.
But Boca gained the advantage shortly after the interval as Carlos Palacios swept a low first-time effort into the far corner after Merentiel's cut-back.
Cavani went some way to making amends by setting up Merentiel to fire home from long-range just after the hour as Boca secured its 10th win of the campaign.
The result leaves Boca with 32 points, five ahead of second-placed Huracan, which was held to a 1-1 home draw by Defensa y Justicia earlier in the day.
The visitors took the lead through Lucas Ferreira's header, but they were reduced to 10 men when Alexis Soto was sent off for a second yellow card after a bad tackle on Agustin Urzi.
Leandro Lescano equalized by volleying home from 12 yards, but his team was unable to find a winner as veteran Defensa y Justicia goalkeeper Enrique Bologna made nine saves.
In Saturday's only other fixture, Geronimo Rivera scored late to earn Banfield a 1-1 draw at Lanus. Enditem
