THE HAGUE, April 20 (Xinhua) -- Top favorite Tadej Pogacar was beaten at the finish line by Mattias Skjelmose in an enthralling end to the Dutch cycling classic Amstel Gold Race on Sunday in Berg en Terblijt.
Slovenia's Pogacar of UAE Emirates seemed to be heading for victory for much of the race through the hills of the southern Netherlands' province of Limburg, over 255 kilometers from Maastricht to Berg en Terblijt.
However, with less than 10 kilometers remaining, Belgium's Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) and Denmark's Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek) joined him. In the end, Skjelmose was the strongest in the sprint, ahead of Pogacar and Evenepoel.
Mischa Bredewold (Team SD Worx - Protime) surprisingly won the women's Amstel Gold Race. The 24-year-old Dutchwoman from Amersfoort, who became European champion in 2023, rode away from compatriot Ellen van Dijk on the last climb of the Cauberg and recorded her first victory in a cycling classic.
