BAGHDAD, April 22 (Xinhua) -- The Iraqi Ministry of Planning announced Tuesday that the illiteracy rate in the country has decreased to 15 percent.
Abdul Zahra al-Hindawi, spokesperson for the ministry, told the official Iraqi News Agency (INA) that "according to the results of the general population and housing census conducted in Iraq at the end of 2024, the illiteracy rate reached 15 percent."
Al-Hindawi noted that the latest rate is lower than in previous years, as the rate recorded in 2020 was more than 20 percent.
The females in Iraq have a higher illiteracy rate than males, due to social conditions and other issues that prevent women from completing their education, al-Hindawi added.
From Nov. 20 to 23, 2024, Iraq launched a nationwide population and housing census for the first time in 27 years. Enditem
