PARIS, May 7 (Xinhua) -- French President Emmanuel Macron and visiting German Chancellor Friedrich Merz held a meeting on Wednesday, pledging to strengthen cooperation in defense and other key areas.

Speaking at a joint press conference after the meeting, Macron said that France and Germany would continue to increase investment in the defense sector, accelerate joint weapons development projects, and hold regular consultations to address shared strategic challenges.

Merz stated that the two countries are committed to enhancing Europe's security and defense capabilities, and to reinforcing the "European pillar" of NATO.

Both leaders also reiterated their determination to continue supporting Ukraine.

Macron and Merz emphasized the pivotal role of Franco-German relations in the development of the European Union (EU). Beyond defense, they said they would work together to improve the EU's industrial competitiveness and streamline its regulatory procedures.

Macron also noted that the two countries would coordinate efforts to address U.S. tariffs.

On Wednesday, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot and his newly appointed German counterpart Johann Wadephul issued a joint statement reaffirming their commitment to reinforcing common defense and building a more sovereign and resilient EU.

Merz was elected German Chancellor on Tuesday, and France is his first official foreign visit. Following his talks in Paris, he is scheduled to visit Poland later on Wednesday. Enditem
