YAOUNDE, June 10 (Xinhua) -- Cavaye Yeguie Djibril, speaker of Cameroon's National Assembly, said on Tuesday that the build-up to the country's presidential election is intense, urging restraint, responsibility, and patriotism.

"It is an understatement to say that the anticipated event is generating considerable excitement across the country and even beyond. We must, therefore, do everything we can, each at our own level, to ensure that this election takes place in a calm and serene atmosphere," Cavaye said in his opening remarks during an official ceremony to commence the June session of the National Assembly.

His speech came barely two days after opposition leader Maurice Kamto said he was enraged and disappointed after security forces disrupted a meeting he was scheduled to hold in the commercial hub of Douala over the weekend.

The presidential election is scheduled for October. According to the country's electoral calendar, presidential candidates will begin to deposit their files for scrutiny next month.

"It will also be an opportunity for our country to confirm the political maturity of its people as well as the solidity of its democratic foundation," Cavaye added. Enditem
