West Australian police investigating death of infant found in stormwater drain

SYDNEY, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Police in the Australian state of Western Australia (WA) are investigating the death of an infant whose body was found in a drain in the state capital of Perth.

Emergency services were called to the scene in Perth's northern suburbs, where the body was found by maintenance workers in a stormwater drain around 1 p.m. local time on Monday.

A spokesperson for WA Police said that multiple resources were deployed, and an investigation has commenced.

The age and gender of the child have not been confirmed, but Nine Network television reported that the child was a newborn.

WA Police on Monday night issued an alert to maternity hospitals across Perth, citing concerns for the welfare of the infant's mother.
