ISTANBUL, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- Türkiye has stepped up inspections at its northwestern border with Greece and Bulgaria, detaining 153 suspects and seizing more than 5.5 tonnes of narcotics in the first nine months of 2025, authorities said on Tuesday.
Edirne Governor Yunus Sezer told reporters that security forces confiscated 3.03 tonnes of cannabis, 2.24 tonnes of skunk, 199 kg of cocaine, 83 kg of methamphetamine, as well as 61,682 synthetic drugs and 98,252 narcotic pills. He said the seizures marked a 123 percent increase from the same period last year.
Edirne, which hosts several crossings into Greece and Bulgaria, is a key transit point for narcotics and contraband bound for Europe. Authorities say they have deployed tighter border security, improved intelligence sharing, and coordinated local operations to curb the flow.
Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said in August that, since the current cabinet took office in June 2023, 81,467 suspects had been arrested in nationwide anti-narcotics operations. Security forces have seized or destroyed 211 tonnes of drugs, 213 million narcotic pills, and 313 million cannabis plants. Enditem
