COLOMBO, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka has temporarily suspended operations at the Colombo Port due to severe weather conditions, the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) announced on Saturday.

According to the SLPA, all terminal operations were halted after heavy rains and strong winds created unsafe conditions for port workers and vessels. Officials said the suspension is a precautionary measure and that services will resume once weather conditions improve.

The Colombo Port, one of South Asia's busiest transshipment hubs, handles the majority of Sri Lanka's container traffic and plays a key role in regional shipping routes.

Sri Lanka has been experiencing intense rainfall, flooding and landslides over the past few days as a deep depression off the island's southeast coast intensified into a cyclonic system. Enditem
