COLOMBO, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's Disaster Management Center (DMC) said on Saturday that the death toll from Cyclone Ditwah, which has been affecting the country in recent days, has climbed to 123, with 130 people still missing.
Kandy District reported the highest number of casualties, recording 51 deaths and 67 missing persons. In Badulla, authorities confirmed 35 deaths, with 27 people unaccounted for. Kegalle has reported nine deaths, followed by eight in Matale, six in Nuwara Eliya, and five in Ampara, according to the DMC. These districts are in Sri Lanka's Central, Uva and Eastern provinces.
The agency said Cyclone Ditwah has now affected 373,428 people from 102,877 families, displacing tens of thousands across multiple districts. As of the latest update, 43,925 individuals have been relocated to 488 safety centers.
The Department of Irrigation warned that the risk of severe flooding along several rivers is increasing, with continuous rainfall pushing river levels higher.
The weather system, currently moving across coastal Sri Lanka and the adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal, is intensifying and heading towards the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Enditem
