ISLAMABAD, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- Five militants were killed and two Pakistani soldiers, including a lieutenant colonel, died on Saturday during an intelligence-based operation in the Bannu district of Pakistan's northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, the military said.

According to a statement issued by Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media wing of the Pakistan army, a military convoy was attacked while acting on reports about the presence of militants, including a suicide bomber.

The military said the leading group intercepted a vehicle-borne suicide bomber before it could reach Bannu city, preventing what it termed a major catastrophe against civilians and law enforcement personnel.

During a subsequent exchange of fire, security forces located and killed five militants in the area.

However, a suicide bomber rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into one of the security vehicles, resulting in the death of the army officer and the soldier. Enditem
