BEIRUT -- At least nine people were killed and dozens of others injured on Thursday in Israeli strikes targeting southern Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley in eastern Lebanon, Lebanon's National News Agency reported.

Among the casualties were Syrian and Bangladeshi nationals, it reported.

BUCHAREST -- Romanian President Nicusor Dan on Thursday nominated his adviser Eugen Tomac as prime minister-designate.

Tomac, a member of the European Parliament and leader of a party not in Romania's legislature, will have 10 days to form a government and secure the parliament's vote of confidence, according to the Romanian Constitution.

His nomination comes after the parliament approved a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan's government in early May, forcing Bolojan and his cabinet to step down. (Romania-PM-Nomination)

DHAKA -- A brutal heatwave that is scorching large parts of Bangladesh is expected to continue, the country's meteorological department said on Thursday, as a fourth person has died from suspected heat stroke in the South Asian country over the past four days.

ZAGREB -- Four people were killed when a Germany-registered light aircraft crashed near Medulin in western Croatia on Thursday, Croatian authorities said.

The aircraft had departed from Austria and was en route to Medulin when it went down shortly before noon, according to local media reports.

KAMPALA -- Uganda has confirmed one new Ebola case, bringing the total number of infections to 16 since the outbreak in neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) was declared on May 15, the country's Ministry of Health said on Thursday.
