MALE, July 24 (Xinhua) -- Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu has ratified the country's first comprehensive law governing human organ transplantation, PSM News, the Maldives' state media, reported on Friday.
The Organ Transplant Act establishes a legal and regulatory framework for providing safe and high-quality organ transplant services. It defines transplant procedures and sets out the rights and responsibilities of donors, recipients and healthcare providers.
Under the law, an Organ Transplant Council appointed by the president will formulate national transplantation policies.
An Organ Transplant Authorization Committee will assess and approve individual transplant applications to ensure that procedures comply with the law.
The legislation also establishes standards for organ transplantation and introduces offenses and penalties for procedures conducted in violation of the law.
The government said the framework would help ensure that organ transplant services are conducted safely, ethically and in accordance with national standards.
Parliament initially passed the bill on May 14, but Muizzu returned it for reconsideration on May 31.
The parliamentary Committee on Social Affairs proposed amendments on July 1, and lawmakers approved the revised bill on July 14 before resubmitting it to the president.
The law will take effect 180 days after its publication in the Government Gazette. Enditem
