Directed by Yi Xiaoxing and starring Chang Yuan and Deng Jiajia, the comedy is inspired by the 2006 French film "The Valet," following a sausage vendor who accidentally becomes the fake boyfriend of a top influencer — all to cover up her real relationship with an overbearing livestream tycoon. Thrust into the spotlight, the bumbling vendor struggles to navigate his new online fame, delivering nonstop laughs as he stumbles through the wild world of livestream stardom.
The lead actors Chang and Deng revealed they immersed themselves in research — studying livestreamers, influencers and even learning how to barbecue sausages — to deliver authentic performances. By integrating their firsthand experiences, they manage to reveal the behind-the-scenes reality of the livestream industry.
Beyond comedy, the film also offers a sharp critique of the dark side of the industry, such as the selling of fake or low-quality products, pressuring employees with unfair contracts, workplace bullying and psychological manipulation.
"We researched extensively, studying real cases and social news — every comedic segment in the film is rooted in actual events," director Yi said.
He added, "We're exploring the tension between authenticity and illusion. As the film observes — everyone gets their 15 minutes of fame. But when that fleeting spotlight fades, do we remain authentic or construct elaborate facades? This existential dilemma lies at the heart of our story."
"The Open Door" will open nationwide during China's five-day Labor Day holiday beginning May 1.
