During the 14th Five-Year-Plan period (2021-2025), Changping district in Beijing recorded an average annual GDP growth of 6.2%, with total output surpassing 180 billion yuan ($25 billion), according to a press conference Monday. In the first half of this year, GDP rose by 7.1% year on year.
The district has promoted integrated development of talent, education, and technology. Changping hosts one-third of the city's national key laboratories, has the largest number of universities, and boasts the highest share of working-age population.
In Shahe Higher-Education Area, Changping is building a future college technology park with 10 universities, which has been recognized as Beijing's most investment-worthy industrial park in 2025.
In Nankou, a new national laboratory base, co-built by Changping and Tsinghua University, has been in operation. Two labs are already in use and more than 10 innovation projects launched.
In Machikou, Peking University is developing a new cluster of national key laboratories. Together, these hubs will house over 40 national key laboratories, forming a world-class innovation engine.
Pharmaceuticals and health, advanced manufacturing, and advanced energy have grown into Changping's three pillar industries, each exceeding 100 billion yuan in scale.
The health industry now gathers 2,854 enterprises, generating 104 billion yuan in annual revenue with an average growth of 9.2%. Advanced manufacturing surpassed 160 billion yuan last year, rising 15% in the first half of this year.
Advanced energy, focused on internet-based energy, wind, solar, hydrogen, and storage, reached 253.2 billion yuan in revenue, supported by 60 national and provincial labs and technology centers.
To support these industries, Changping has laid out three major corridors. The G6 Innovation Corridor in the west focuses on life sciences, digital intelligence, and education clusters, with over 10 innovation hubs and 5.2 million square meters already built.
The G45 Industrial Corridor in the east brings together advanced energy, future health, and state-owned enterprise clusters.
In the central area, the Beijing North Ecological Corridor connects forests and parks, creating a new model of industry-city integration and green livability.
Changping district is also improving people's well-being. From 2021 to 2025, residents' per capita disposable income grew by an average of 6.75% annually, surpassing 60,000 yuan.
Since 2021, 28,000 new school enrollment slots have been added, along with expanded childcare and eldercare services. In the mega residential community Huilongguan-Tiantongyuan, Changping has implemented plans to improve its infrastructure and governance, such as delivering 180 major projects and introducing 17 schools.
