As one of north China's most dynamic coastal cities, Qingdao continues to attract a growing number of foreign professionals. In response to this influx, the city has seen a rise in high-quality international schools emphasizing holistic education, which blends global curricula with deep cultural immersion.
Leading this educational movement is the International School of Qingdao (ISQ), the first of its kind in both Qingdao and Shandong province. Founded on the principle of holistic development, ISQ defines itself as a "vibrant community that provides transformative, holistic pre-K-12 education," committed to shaping globally minded individuals who "learn, love and lead."

What distinguishes ISQ is its international environment. The school brings together students and staff from 14 different countries, including South Korea, the United States and Canada. As Ben Bowser, support team director at ISQ, put it, "Our students get to interact with the whole world right here in Qingdao."
Beyond multicultural exposure, ISQ places a strong emphasis on Chinese language acquisition and cultural understanding. The school regularly organizes Chinese courses and cultural trips for both students and foreign teachers, facilitating engagement with the local context.
"I think the students and the families like both cultures," said Gabe Lee, head principal of ISQ, highlighting the appeal of bilingual education. This integration of Chinese language and culture into the international curriculum is a key aspect of the school's philosophy.
"One of the key factors that help our foreign staff adapt and stay here longer is that they learn Chinese language and Chinese culture," added Bowser, who oversees the project.
ISQ also offers a character development program, focusing on cultivating a specific character trait each month. "What I've learned at this school is that we really want to develop the education of the whole child," Bowser said.
This holistic education is also a hallmark of Malvern College Qingdao (MCQ), an independent middle school located in Qingdao's Chengyang district, which was founded in 2012.

With its advanced educational philosophy and comprehensive curriculum, MCQ has gained widespread recognition. It is the only school in Shandong province to be ranked among the top 30 in the Forbes China International School rankings, placing 21st nationally for bilingual middle schools and 29th for bilingual high schools.
"Malvern's key values are educating the whole child. It's not just about passing exams; it's about developing the character within the student," said Peter Shaw, deputy headmaster of MCQ.
