The ITTF-ATTU 28th Asian Table Tennis Team Championships opened on Saturday in Bhubaneswar, India, with 13 qualification spots per gender for the 2026 ITTF World Team Table Tennis Championships Finals in London on offer.

A total of 22 men's and 20 women's teams are competing in the two-stage continental event. For each gender, the top six teams from the previous Asian Championships - including China, Japan and South Korea - have received direct entry into the knockout stage. The remaining teams are divided into groups of three or four, with group winners advancing to the knockout phase to contest the two remaining spots.

After Saturday's opening matches, Kazakhstan, Iran, Singapore, DPR Korea and Thailand topped their respective men's groups, while Sri Lanka, Kazakhstan, Chinese Taipei and Malaysia led the women's standings.

China will play one of the group winners in the quarterfinals of both events on Monday.

At last year's Asian Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan, China defended its men's team title, while Japan edged China to capture the women's crown.
