Edwuin Cetre and Guido Carrillo scored either side of halftime as Estudiantes climbed to the top of Argentina's Primera Division Group A standings on Sunday with a 2-0 home win over La Plata rivals Gimnasia.
Colombian forward Cetre broke the deadlock in first-half stoppage time with a diving header after Santiago Ascacibar's headed flick.
Carrillo doubled the lead by pouncing on an errant defensive pass and calmly slotting a shot between the legs of goalkeeper Nelson Insfran.
"Today we showed the true side of this club," Estudiantes manager Eduardo Dominguez told reporters. "We could have scored more goals but what is even more important is that we virtually didn't give them any clear chances to score. That shows how solid we are as a team."
Estudiantes now has 21 points from 13 games, two points ahead of second-placed Defensa y Justicia, which has a game in hand. Gimnasia is 12th in Group B with 13 points so far.
In other Primera Division fixtures on Sunday, Velez Sarsfield won 2-0 at Sarmiento, San Martin edged Independiente 1-0 at home and Rosario Central won 1-0 at home to Platense.
