While much of the spotlight falls on Harry Kane, Joshua Kimmich, Michael Olise and Luis Diaz, Bayern Munich's Konrad Laimer has quietly emerged as one of the team's most influential figures.

The Austria international rarely receives the recognition he deserves, yet fans on social media have dubbed him the Bavarians' unsung hero. Ahead of Tuesday's UEFA Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain, the 28-year-old has become a cornerstone of coach Vincent Kompany's system, having played almost every position on the pitch.
Whether operating as a fullback, winger or central midfielder, Laimer consistently fills the gaps and links Bayern's attacking stars. "One of my advantages is being able to adapt to several positions," he said when joining Bayern in 2023. "I get along with various spots."
Though he once described himself as an "aggressive leader," the numbers show his influence runs deeper. According to Opta, Laimer leads Bayern in progressive carries - advancing the ball over several meters into attacking areas - and also ranks among the club's top creators, averaging 4.53 chances per game. Only Kimmich (4.82), Kane (7.13) and Olise (7.22) register more.
"That's the path I identify for myself as a footballer," Laimer said, while German legend Lothar Matthaus praised him as "one of Bayern's most precious players."
Kompany has labeled the midfielder "stable and flexible," praising his reliability and defensive contribution. Sporting Director Christoph Freund added that Laimer's team-first attitude makes him popular in the dressing room. "Everyone feels comfortable with him. He's a team player on and off the pitch," Freund said.
Reports suggest Bayern has already opened talks on a contract extension despite his deal running until 2027.
Laimer admitted his competitive streak runs deep. "When we play board games at home, I'm charming if I win," he said with a grin. "If things go wrong, I can be pretty intolerable for a while."
