Located in Beijing's Tongzhou district, the Sub-center Station — the largest underground comprehensive transportation hub in Asia — is set to open by the end of the year.
The Sub-center Station enables rapid rail connections from the capital's sub-center to Tangshan in Hebei province as well as Tianjin's Baodi and Beichen districts. Its launch will bring the number of major railway hubs in Beijing to eight.
With a total construction area of about 3 million square meters, including 1.28 million square meters underground, the hub's subterranean space is equivalent to seven Beijing South Railway Stations.
Despite its scale, the hub is designed for high efficiency, integrating intercity rail operations, metro transfers, passenger services, municipal facilities, and multimodal transport connections. A major urban complex featuring offices, commercial spaces, residences, and hotels will rise above ground.
The station's underground structure spans three levels that together support seamless movement and passenger services. The B1 level functions as both the primary entry area and an urban public space, equipped with ticketing, ID verification, and reserved sections for future commercial and civic use.
The B2 level serves as the main waiting and interchange hall, with 14 ticket gates arranged in seven groups and planned links to Metro Line 6, the Pinggu Line, and dedicated areas for transfers to taxis and ride-hailing services. The B3 level houses the intercity platforms, built with eight platforms and 14 tracks to accommodate high-frequency services.
Trains are already running trial services between the Sub-center Station, Yanjiao Station, and Dachang Station. The trip from the sub-center to Yanjiao currently takes about 10 minutes. The full 149-kilometer Beijing–Tangshan intercity railway includes eight stations and is entering the final phase before commercial operation.
As a major node in the integrated Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei railway network, the Sub-center Station is also planned to connect the hub with Tianjin Binhai New Area, Beijing Capital International Airport, Beijing Daxing International Airport, and Xiong'an New Area.
