Another injury blow for struggling Girona

La Liga strugglers Girona have suffered a bad injury setback with the news that veteran forward Portu could miss the rest of the season with a probable torn cruciate knee ligament.

The 33-year-old, who has played in 10 of Girona's 12 matches this season, suffered the injury during Wednesday's training session, the club confirmed the injury on Thursday.

The injury is another setback for the club, which has suffered several important injuries this season, with veteran central defender David Lopez only making one appearance due to a muscle problem, while Dutch international Donny van de Beek will also miss the rest of the campaign after rupturing his Achilles tendon.

Although Portu had lost his place in the Girona starting 11, his pace and aggression made him an important player for coach Michel Sanchez to bring off the substitutes' bench in the second half.

Girona currently sits third from bottom of La Liga and its next match is a difficult visit to play Betis on Sunday afternoon.
