China's Shen, Yao finish 1-2 in women's 10m air pistol at ISSF World Cup in Granada

Shen Yiyao and Yao Qianxun secured a one-two finish in the women's 10m air pistol final, while Yang Yuhao added gold in the men's 25m rapid fire pistol on Saturday at the ISSF World Cup in Granada, Spain.

The victories by Shen and Yang further cemented China's lead in the medal standings. After eight finals, China has collected six gold and three silver medals, followed by Germany with one gold and one silver, and India with one gold.

Shen, making her World Cup debut, qualified seventh but produced an outstanding performance in the women's 10m air pistol final to claim gold with 244.2 points. The 21-year-old took the lead early and maintained a comfortable advantage, at one stage opening up a five-point gap over her nearest rival.

"It's beyond my expectations," Shen said. "It's my first World Cup and I just hoped to do my best in every shot and enjoy each of them."

Her teammate Yao, the reigning world champion, recovered from a mid-final dip to take silver with 239.6 points. Zorana Arunovic, the Olympic mixed team champion, came from behind to secure bronze after edging Veronika Major to fourth by 0.1 point.

"I don't think there is a word that can describe this final better than 'crazy'," Arunovic said, referring to the tightly contested match in which four shooters, including herself, were tied at 139.4 points at one stage.

"I knew I was very close to being eliminated in the early stages of the final, but there are two things I am known for in the shooting world: I am very hardworking, and I never give up until the very end," she added.

Later on Saturday, in the men's 25m rapid fire pistol final, which featured eight finalists under the new format, 20-year-old Yang battled all the way from the bottom to claim the gold medal with 31 hits. Massimo Spinella of Italy took the silver with 30 hits while Tokyo Olympic champion Jean Quiquampoix of France settled for a bronze with 27 hits.

The World Cup will conclude on Sunday with the men's 50m rifle three positions and women's 10m air rifle finals.
