Pedro scored twice to fire Flamengo to a 2-1 win over local rival Fluminense in Brazil's Serie A on Sunday.
Flamengo took the lead at the Maracana when Pedro latched onto Samuel Lino's flicked pass and, spotting goalkeeper Fabio off his line, launched a 35-yard shot that bounced into an unguarded net.
Former Atletico Madrid winger Lino was again the provider just after halftime, delivering an inviting cross that Pedro chested in at the far post.
Venezuela international midfielder Jefferson Savarino reduced the deficit by pouncing on a defensive error to slide in from close range 15 minutes from time.
Flamengo survived a tense final 20 minutes to clinch its sixth win of the campaign and move to second in the standings with 20 points, ahead of Fluminense on goal difference.
Elsewhere in Brazil's top flight on Sunday, Palmeiras drew 0-0 at Corinthians, Cruzeiro won 2-1 at home to Bragantino, Botafogo was held to a 2-2 home draw by Coritiba, and Athletico Paranaense won 2-0 at home to Chapecoense.
