The International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) recently unveiled its themed garden at the 15th China (Wenzhou) International Garden Expo, which will open on April 15 in Wenzhou, Zhejiang province, offering a platform for international exchange and ecological innovation.
The IFLA Garden integrates global landscape design expertise with maritime culture and the regional character of Wenzhou, known for its rich ocean heritage and mountainous terrain.
The design concept draws inspiration from a Northern Song dynasty (960-1127) shipwreck discovered at Wenzhou's Shuomen ancient port, and pays tribute to the city's seafaring history.
At its core is a ship-shaped structure, complemented by reflective water pools, reef-like installations and wind banners, evoking the imagery of a vessel navigating the open seas.
The rooftop garden is divided into sections representing IFLA's five global regions, each featuring representative plant species. This design creates a multidimensional ecological landscape where architecture, terrain, and vegetation interact seamlessly.
More than a conventional exhibition garden, the project serves as an open-air classroom for ecological education, a demonstration site for Wenzhou's sponge city initiative, and a platform for international professional cooperation.
Using landscape architecture as a bridge, the garden connects global ideas with local practice. Positioned along the Oujiang River, it stands as a new green landmark reflecting Wenzhou's openness and its commitment to cross-border collaboration.
