Kaio Jorge and Luis Sinisterra scored either side of halftime as Cruzeiro edged to a 2-1 home win over Chapecoense in Brazil's Serie A on Sunday.
Brazil international striker Jorge opened the scoring by converting a 26th-minute penalty and Sinisterra doubled the lead with a 72nd-minute strike.
Joao Paulo pulled a goal back in the 78th minute but the hosts defended resolutely in the final minutes to register their sixth win of the campaign.
The Belo Horizonte side moved to ninth in the 20-team standings with 23 points, 14 ahead of last-placed Chapecoense.
In Sao Paulo, Moroccan forward Zakaria Labyad struck in the 87th minute to give Corinthians a 1-0 home win over Atletico Mineiro. The result left Corinthians 15th in the standings with 21 points, trailing Atletico on goal difference.
Elsewhere in Brazil's top flight on Sunday, Bragantino won 3-0 at Vasco da Gama and Athletico Paranaense prevailed 2-1 at Remo.
