Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman said his side must improve its execution and make better use of substitutions when it faces Sweden in a FIFA World Cup Group F match on Saturday.

The Dutch opened their campaign with a 2-2 draw against Japan, conceding a late equalizer after taking the lead.

Speaking at a pre-match press conference on Friday, Koeman acknowledged that several tactical adjustments made during the game did not have the desired effect.

"The substitutions did not have the impact we expected, and as head coach, I take responsibility for that," Koeman said. "We wanted to apply more pressure higher up the pitch, but we were unable to do so consistently."

The Netherlands will be seeking its first win of the tournament against a Sweden side that began its campaign with a 5-1 victory over Tunisia.

Koeman highlighted Sweden's attacking strength, particularly forwards Viktor Gyokeres and Alexander Isak, who both scored in the opening match.

"They are strong players with pace and quality in front of goal," he said. "But our focus is not only on individual players. Sweden performed well as a team and we will need to be prepared for the challenge they present."

The Dutch will be without defender Quinten Timber, who has been ruled out after suffering a concussion in the draw with Japan. Midfielder Frenkie de Jong is also being monitored after experiencing a stomach problem.

Despite the setback in the opening match, Koeman expressed confidence that his players would respond positively as they look to strengthen their position in Group F.

"We have discussed what needs to improve and how we want to play," he said. "Now the task is to put those ideas into practice on the field."
