Olympic mixed doubles gold medalists Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha cruised into the quarterfinals on Monday, while the women's singles draw saw a series of upsets on the second day of main draw at the World Table Tennis United States Smash.

Wang and Sun, the fourth-seeded pair competing together for the first time in six months, swept past Slovakian duo Lubomir Pistej and Tatiana Kukulkova 11-7, 11-6, 11-4, extending their perfect record in WTT Grand Smash events.

"It's been a long time since we played together, so there was a bit of unfamiliarity when we teamed up again," Wang said after the match. "We're not yet at our best. Hopefully we can find a good rhythm as the tournament goes on."

Pistej and Kukulkova, ranked world No. 46, entered the match with a first-round victory over Chan Baldwin of Hong Kong, China and South Korea's Kim Na-yeong, but found the Chinese pair a step too far.

Less than four hours later, world No. 1 Sun made a winning start to her singles campaign, defeating Australia's Liu Yangzi in straight games 11-9, 11-3, 11-6 to advance to the round of 32.

Sun will next face Germany's Nina Mittelham, who beat 24th-ranked Romanian veteran Bernadette Szocs 3-0.

Besides Szocs, the women's singles draw also saw top-20 players sent packing in the opening round on Monday.

Sixth-seeded Chen Yi of China wasted a two-game lead before losing to German chopper Han Ying in full games 5-11, 9-11, 11-3, 11-7, 11-7, while world No. 9 Sabine Winter of Germany, a semifinalist at Singapore Smash earlier this year, suffered a shock defeat to China's youngster Qin Yuxuan, 11-8, 6-11, 12-10, 11-9.

Japan's Miyu Nagasaki, ranked No. 18, also bowed out in a tight contest against qualifier Huang Yu-Jie of Chinese Taipei, who lost the first game but saved multiple game points to prevail 6-11, 11-9, 13-11, 13-11.

In the men's singles draw, world No. 11 Alexis Lebrun dispatched Sweden's Anton Kallberg in straight games to set up a second-round encounter with fellow Frenchman Simon Gauzy. His younger brother Felix Lebrun, No. 4 seed, had qualified the previous day.

No. 9 seed Qiu Dang eased past qualifier Csaba Andras 3-0 and will next face former German top paddler Dimitrij Ovtcharov in the round of 32.

The tournament continues Tuesday with second-round singles matches and men's and women's doubles round of 16. The mixed doubles title will be decided on July 3.
